In “The Five Ways,” Aquinas provides five different arguments for the existence of God. The “First Way” is based upon claims about motion and change. In your explanation provide an account of the “First Way” that demonstrates your understanding and, in your analysis section, criticize the argument Aquinas makes. Some questions to consider: Aquinas uses the concepts of “actuality” and “potentiality.” What does these concepts mean? How are potentiality and actuality related to motion and change? Why can’t something produce motion if that thing is not “actual”? Why can’t something cause itself to move? Why can’t there be an infinity of movers? What must there be a “first mover”? Is the “first mover” God?
