Instructions: How has mainstream society in the various artifacts treated those on the

margins? Focus on the attitudes and cruelty of society. Use Buber’s relationship concepts of I-It and
I-Thou in your analysis.
Part I: Discuss Orientalism and give an example of a western artifact that shows how the western lens views the east as we discussed in class. We discussed examples of films and paintings that reflected this as well as a list of movies and artifacts in the second powerpoint on Orientalism.  Use Buber’s relatIonship concepts of I-It and I-Thou in your analysis.
Part II: Discuss The Life and Times of Sara Baartman. Discuss how European societies
viewed and treated the indigenous Other. Use Buber’s relationship concepts of I-It and IThou in your analysis.
Part III: Discuss the Tao Te Ching in relation to society. Pay particular attention to these
chapters that relate to society: 53, 57, 58, 59, 60, 61, 66, 75, 80. Pick a verse and analyze
it in reference to society/collectives.
