The impact of racial and socio-economic factors on crime prevention and enforcement

The final argument essay acts as a showcase of all the rhetorical skills gained this semester.
Students are asked to dissect a complex issue that intersects the planes of media, news, and
entertainment. Students should demonstrate a complex understanding of how credibility is gained, how
different modes of argument are used to persuade, and how to how to analyze rhetoric disseminated
across multiple texts. The level of polish required for this paper, including MLA use, synthesis and
integration of research, and original critical analysis should certify the student as prepared to accomplish
college-level writing.
Format: All formal assignments must be typed and double spaced. Guidelines for MLA format are
available in the Writing and Research handbook available on Canvas, as well as on the Purdue Owl
website. Additional assistance can be found in the Writing Center or by visiting me during office hours.
Please set 1” margins all around, and remove any default settings that add extra spacing in between
lines or paragraphs. Indent the first sentence of the paragraph. This should not exceed one page, but if
for some reason it does, staple all pages and number them. Use 12 pt font—either Times New Roman,
Calibri or Arial. In the upper left-hand corner, include, in this order: Your Name (line 1), My name (line
2), The Class AND section number (line 3), and the date (line 4). Also, title your assignment using the
assignment name and a brief description (line 5); this title should be center-aligned.
