    ART CRITIQUE STEPS REMINDER

    1. Describe the work of art in your own words, using descriptive vocabulary and objective point of view, suspending judgment. If it is a visual art, explain what you see. If it is drama or film, give a short plot summary. If it is music, state what you hear.  Be thorough in your description but do not ramble.
    2. Give some details about context that might relate to the meaning of the work.  Say something about the artist, or about the period in which the art was created. How do these details add to the artwork’s impact and its meaning? How is society/culture/history reflected in the artwork? (You will need to conduct a bit of research to answer this question. Use credible, preferably scholarly, sources and cite your sources.)
    3. Examine the quality of the work. What specific things about it make it seem well done or poorly done?  Again, be thorough in your examination, but do not ramble.
    4. Consider the human value of the work. What is the artist conveying about life—specifically about S.O.N.G. (Self, Other, Nature and God)? What does the work help you to better understand?
    5. Explain the personal value of the work. How is it significant to you? Provide details to support or explain this opinion.
