The play examines many aspects, such as racial barrierThis assignment will focus on the interpretation of symbolism from the book “Fences” by August Wilson.

The Research Paper with focus on your interpretation of a particular SYMBOL / SYMBOLISM within Fences. You will identify the symbol, tell me what you believe what is represents, and then analyze how it functions in in the text by pointing to specific / concrete evidence drawn from the text. Building on this analysis, you will ultimately provide your interpretation of its meaning, that is persuasively argue how you believe this symbol provides insight into or critiques some aspect of history/culture/society that relates to the African American experience in America, either during when the play is set (1950s) or when the play was written (1980s). You will write a formal essay of five to seven (5-7) typed pages, using proper MLA format / documentation, including parenthetical quote and paraphrase

citations, as well as a Works Cited page. Make sure to use the new formats from the 2016 update of MLA style. You must specifically connect your thesis with the author and/or the play in at least three specific ways. That is, you must have at least three supporting points for your thesis, grounded in concrete evidence from the text. Each of these supporting points must be developed in separate body paragraph sections, each with a topic sentence that relates back to your thesis and at least one quote/paraphrase, citation, and Works Cited entry. Remember, as noted in the Research Proposal assignment. You should have a source which allows you to provide relevant background information about your topic, as well as specific facts and examples that help connect your interpretation of the text to the way you see it responding to contemporary cultural ideas, issues, et. If you wish, you can incorporate a fourth scholarly source, focusing on the historical moment, to help further ground or develop this interplay between the primary text and its cultural moment. You must do a new Works Cited page for the Research Paper with a formal MLA entry for each source you quote or paraphrase in your essay. You cannot use your annotated bibliography as your Work Cited page. You must quote or paraphrase a source in order to include it on your Works Cited page. Use at least one—and not more than three—quotes and/or paraphrases per body paragraph. The Research Paper must be typed and double-spaced. Print on the front side of the page only. When you submit it, in your folder, you must also submit your signed topic approval form, your graded Annotated Bibliography, and copies of page one for all web-based
articles quoted or paraphrased.
