The Role of the Fool in Proverbs: Exploring Thematic Material and its Contribution to the Book of Wisdom

Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to recognize the use and reuse of thematic material in Proverbs and to discern how the theme Fool contribute to the shape and function of Proverbs as a book of “wisdom.”
This assignment is part 3 of 3:
  • Proverbs Theme Paper Part 1: Annotated Bibliography – Due in Module/Week 3
  • Proverbs Theme Paper Part 2: Outline – Due in Module/Week 5
  • Proverbs Theme Paper Final – Due in Module/Week 6
Prompt: By the time you begin your essay, you should have accomplished the following:
  1. Submitted an annotated bibliography that indicates at least five resources you are using and how those resources will serve your process, submitting in Module/ Week 3.
  2. Proposed a detailed outline for your theme in Proverbs and received a grade from your instructor in Module/Week 5.
Using the plan approved in step 2 above and the decisions made, and resources collected in steps 1 and 2, you will write a final essay that traces your chosen theme as it develops through Proverbs. You will address issues such as:
  1. Where does this theme first appear? Is it significantly placed toward the beginning of the book, or not? How does the theme develop or change through Proverbs?
  2. Are the passages that address your theme unified in their message? Or are different views presented between texts by the different authors of Proverbs?
  3. What are the various scholarly views on the theme and how do they differ?
  4. What conclusions might you ultimately make about the function of your theme in Proverbs and the Wisdom Literature as a whole?
Parameters: Keep the following in mind as you write your paper:
Format: Your paper must be five full pages which do not include your bibliography, references, or title page. It must NOT be four pages or less. Avoid being overly verbose. Limit your work to five pages and not beyond. The paper also must be formatted according to Chicago/Turabian standards and submitted as a Word document.
Research: The goal is for you to present your own original argument on the topic, however, this should not just be your observations or opinions. You will need to interact with the scholarly sources from your annotated bibliography and the class textbooks to ground your argument in wider academic discussion. Research must be properly cited in footnotes.
Style: The paper must be written in a formal academic style. It must contain proper grammar and spelling. Avoid the use of colloquialisms or idioms. The overall argument should have a logical flow, avoid unnecessary information (i.e. be concise), and have thoughts/points organized in proper paragraphs.
This assignment utilizes the SafeAssign originality tool. Upon submission, SafeAssign will generate an originality report that detects plagiarism. This report will be sent to your instructor.
