Learning Competencies: Write a personal reflection on your learning to complete your work for each unit. Make relevant connections between past and present.
Each journal entry for our class is composed of three parts. In order to earn full credit for this assignment, you should write a short paragraph for each of the three questions and include specific cited examples.
First, write a section, a minimum of 300 words, in which you reflect on how “freedom” changed in this particular period of American history. Based on the sources and evidence you examined for this Unit, what, in your opinion, were the biggest historical events, issues, ideas, legal statutes, and figures that we studied in this Unit that either promoted, expanded, or restricted freedoms for various peoples. (Use the CH Key Terms as guides if you need help finding specific examples)
Second, what section of the course materials meant the most to you for this Unit? Why? Identify a specific section of the assigned learning materials (a section of a chapter, an entire chapter, an article, a video, or a podcast episode, etc) and cite specific information from that section to show why the ideas presented there impacted you. What did you find most interesting? What was brand new to you? Why were those things interesting? Or, why do you think you’d never learned about certain aspects of American History until now?
Third, identify one historical figure, event, issue, or location from the current Unit and identify a current event (person, event, issue, location) that is either directly connected or that seems comparable in some way to the historical topic you’ve identified. Write a short paragraph that explains the connection you’ve identified between past and present and explain why that connection matters. What might we learn from the past that we could apply in the here and now? And, alternately, why and how should we be careful when making connections between past and present events?
If you have any remaining questions that weren’t answered in the Unit, please also pose those at the end of your journal entry.
Cite evidence and ideas from the course readings as appropriate.
