Paper Organization

Perhaps the most important thing you should keep in mind as you craft your essay is that it needs to be centered around a thesis statement. This need not be anything particularly profound, but it should describe your entire essay in one or two sentences. Be sure to state your topic clearly in the introduction, letting the reader know early on what your text is going to concern itself with. Always keep this overall theme in mind as you progress through the body of your argument. Each of the succeeding paragraphs should have an immediate and obvious relationship to the argument or theme you establish in the introduction. A research paper is not merely a collection of previously published scholarship, but an original piece of scholarship itself. All of the information that you gather should be utilized to reinforce your thesis statement. 

As the research paper is an argument, you need to address the “state of the field,” or what scholars to this point have said concerning your topic and how your argument relates to these publications. A general outline for organization that should help you is as follows:

A Note on Essay Organization

In every scholarly publication from articles to books, though the presentation and information changes, the rhetorical mode of organizing ideas is the same:

1. Introduction: Inform your audience what you are discussing and why it matters; announce to your audience what you are going to communicate

a) Background information

b) Thesis (your argument)

1. Main Body: Lay out your main points

a) State of the field; what scholars have said about your topic to this point

b) Your rebuttal to what has been said; are you arguing for or against the accepted interpretations?

1. Conclusion: Reiterate what you have just discussed and what your audience has learned

In other words, “Tell them what you are going to tell them. Tell them. Then, tell them what you just told them.”

Proceeding with Research 

Online Sources

Please refrain from using online resources, especially if they are not maintained by a scholarly source. A total of around five (at least) to seven sources will be required for this assignment. 

Scholarly Sources do NOT Include

1. Information on websites that were not published in print and then digitized (e.g. articles on J-STOR that have been digitized, but were published by the Art Journal, Art Bulletin, Storia dell’Arte, etc. are acceptable; all others are not)

1. Non-scholarly journals that are not written nor published by experts in the field (e.g. National Geographic, the Smithsonian Magazine, Time; these are not scholarly sources and do not make arguments)

1. General texts that are not from academic art publishers (e.g. survey textbooks, such as The History of Art, or “picture books” that do not have text that asserts a point of view about the works discussed, as most found at major book retailers like Barnes and Noble and Borders)

1. Encyclopedias and dictionaries, even those in the arts such as Grove’s Dictionary of Art. You should record the bibliography listed in such volumes and look up the original publications.

J-STOR is a wonderful resource that will search through hundreds of periodicals; as well, Art Full Text (Wilson), which is another database that searches through more recent publications (be sure to check the box at the top left that states ‘Art Full Text’ before searching, though). Remember to review the bibliography in each article that you find useful as it will send you to other sources

Primary and Secondary Sources

Though it will be necessary to use secondary sources (those written after the area of inquiry) to inform the state of research in the field in question, it is always preferable when making an argument to utilize primary sources (those written by/at the period of inquiry). For instance, if you are writing about Michelangelo’s sculpture, it is better to use the artist’s own words to support your thesis than a twentieth-century art historian’s. If you choose a modern or contemporary topic, such as Picasso or Judd, primary material may also consist of interviews with the artist, or publications by people who had direct contact with your subject

ArtStor Illustrations

At the end of the paper, beginning with a new page titled Illustrations, include images of works discussed found in ArtStor, a digital image database available. You should only have one image per page and under each image you should include the following information: figure number (figure 1, 2, 3), artist, title, date (and material, size and location, if known).

Bibliography

At the end of your paper you should include a Bibliography that lists all academic sources utilized in your research. This should include every source that you cite during the course of your paper. Follow Chicago Manual Style for this (and see the example on Canvas), and remember to avoid internet sources that are not from a scholarly journal
