Writing
a. Use correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure.
b. Use active verbs.
c. You must cite sources (ex. if you are quoting Marx, provide the page number in Sutton where the quote is located).
d. Citation notes: You must cite the readings (last name page #) that you are referencing, i.e. (Sutton 74). You also do NOT need to cite the film when using quotes or paraphrasing the movie.
Analysis
a. You must correctly apply ALL the theories.
b. The theories should not be applied as disconnected entities but used collectively to explain different aspects of the film; you must be able to explain how the theories relate to each other when explaining the film.
c. Apply the theories in an organized fashion instead of citing them randomly.
d. Only relevant details of the film should be described. You will use the theoretical material in the course to explain only select details.
Common Errors to Avoid:
1. Problem of writing a three-page plot description and analyzing the film in a couple of paragraphs. You are being graded on your analysis and critical thinking skills not the plot summary of the film.
2. Problem of describing the theories in much of the paper instead of using the theories to analyze the film. You should not have any paragraphs that summarize the theories. You need to simultaneously analyze the film while incorporating the theoretical perspectives.
3. Writing about the theories as disconnected entities instead of using them collectively to explain different aspects of the film. You must be able to explain how the theories relate to each other when analyzing the film.
