In every project we have this semester, we will be using text to support our paragraphs. The quotes we choose to use from our texts will serve as the Information of our PIE paragraphs, meaning that we will make a Point (present our opinion or claim for that paragraph) and then we will use a quote as the Information to prove our Point.
When we incorporate quotes into our writing, we want to make sure that they flow smoothly into the text but also that they are introduced properly so that the reader knows exactly where our information is coming from. to make sure we do that, there are some very specific steps I want us to follow when we first introduce a quote.
Review the How to Quote/Paraphrase/Summarize. . .to help you complete this assignment.
STEP 1 REVIEW THE FOLLOWING LECTURE ON INTEGRATING SOURCES
STEP 2 READ THE FOLLOWING ABOUT INTEGRATING SOURCES
Review the handout below on how to incorporate quotes into your writing. Pay particular attention to the step by step process and the examples
Incorporating Quotes in Text.pdf
STEP 3 COMPLETE THE WRITING ACTIVITY:
Thinking about the Dr. King article we read this week, find one quote that supports the following Point: Dr. King was able to sway and convince an audience even before earning his degree or becoming a reverend.
STEP 4 COMPLETE THE QUOTE PROCESS:
Image you have written the Point above (Dr. King was able to sway and convince an audience even before earning his degree or becoming a reverend) and now you need to include the quote you chose in Step 2 inside the paragraph. How would you do that? Remember to follow the steps listed in the handout.
- Type the Point above on a separate document (Word)
- Follow the Point with the quote you selected from the text. Make sure to incorporate the quote following each step.
- Include the author name
- Include the author’s credibility
- Include the article name
- Include an action verb to lean into the quote.
- Remember that we only incorporate the quote this way the first time you use that text. If you use the same text multiple times, the second, third, forth….time, all you need to say is the author’s last name and an action verb.
