- Look at the US Census and how they classify race, would your current racial standing be the same 100 years ago? What would you select in 2020? What about in 1920?
- Keep the following in mind: Prior to 1960, your race was determined by census takers, therefore you did not select your race. Also, you did not have the option of selecting more than ONE race prior to 2000.
Familiarize yourself with the Social Construction of Race and answer the following questions:
- As mentioned in your textbook, discuss two reasons why social scientists reject the notion that race is a biological reality.
- In your own words, explain what is meant by the social construction of race. Support your argument with at least one example.
- Hund et al. (2021) argue “Although race is a social construction, it is also true that things perceived as real are real in their consequences.” What does this mean? Explain and support your argument(s) with at least one example.
