1) Review Public Service Model and Competencies:
- Begin by watching the assigned video for this week’s activity.
- Making government better, through data and design | Cat Drew | TEDxWhitehall
- Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MB9R_HxTui0
- Familiarize yourself with the Public Service Leadership Model: https://ourpublicservice.org/public-service-leadership-institute/public-service-leadership-model/
- Proposed by the Partnership for Public Service: https://ourpublicservice.org/
- Pay particular attention to the four core competencies for public leadership: i. Becoming Self-Aware, ii. Engaging Others, iii. Leading Change, iv. Achieving Results. Compare these competencies with those mentioned in the video from Activity 2.
2) Self-Assessment of Competencies:
- Reflect on how you perceive your possession of each of the four competencies highlighted in both the video and the Public Service Leadership Model. Consider your strengths and areas for improvement in each competency.
3) Application of Competencies in Your Experience:
- Review each competency characteristic and contemplate how you apply them in your professional or public service experience. Think of examples or anecdotes to illustrate your application of these competencies.
4) Guiding Principles for Leadership:
- Identify and articulate your guiding principles for public leadership. Consider the values, beliefs, and ethical standards that guide your approach to leadership.
5) Public Leadership Philosophy Reflection paper:
- After examining yourself and considering the guiding questions above, summarize your public leadership philosophy in 2-3 pages in an MS word document and upload it to Canvas. Share your overarching beliefs and principles regarding leadership without the need to list every detail from the previous steps. Express your general perspective on what you consider to be your public leadership philosophy.
