‘What is the best
philosophic case for respecting subject autonomy, e.g. patient autonomy?’ Is the emphasis on such respect merely a matter of Western conventions? Would society not be better off, e.g., if the ‘undesirables’ of society were put to proper research and testing purposes? Or consider the case of medicine aiming to help the patient. Would society not be better off if medicine looked to the good of the community as a whole, as opposed to leaving things at ‘what the patient wants when thinking in their right mind?’ For example, if a worker is needed but refuses treatment based on religious grounds or on what seems like faulty, personal notions of Medicine, ought this ‘liberty’ in fact be respected by the progressive State? BE SURE and focus on Rawls vs. utilitarianism debate!
