The Ultimate Revenge: Capital punishment, Right or Wrong?
In the past, many countries carried out executions. About a century ago, there were movements worldwide for its abolishment, yet many nations took years before ending the practice. For example, the last hangings in England took place in 1965. Australia carried out its final execution in 1967 (others sentenced to death had their sentences commuted to life imprisonment). In Canada the last hangings happened in 1962, and the practice was abolished in 1976.
A highly divisive issue, there are arguments for and against the death penalty. Some believe taking the life of another means giving up your own life, and that execution is a deterrent to others committing serious crimes. Others feel it is cruel, and that there is the risk of putting an innocent person or someone mentally impaired (Joe Arridy for example), to death.
What is your opinion of the death penalty? Do you believe it should be used for crimes such as murder, or is life behind bars punishment enough?
