- For this assignment you are to create an Informative Speech Outline and APA References list.
- Use your pre-approved Informative Speech Topic.
- Do not turn in a script of the speech.
- You will submit two files: One file for the outline and one file for the APA References.
Outline
- Your outline should have the depth (support) that you see in the samples.
- The body should be outlined to a depth of lowercase “a” and “b” at least once.
- If the outline has two main points, each main point should contain approximately 10 to 12 line items (in single sentences)
- If the outline has three points the sentences will be divided up accordingly.
- You will need to add APA in-text citations for all three of your sources.
APA References
- The Reference list must have a minimum of three scholarly sources.
- Sources include books, ebooks, streaming video, and database articles from journals, magazines, encyclopedias and newspapers.
- You may use a web site that you can defend as credible for one of the required sources.
Use the samples below as a guideline.
Exemplary – The specific purpose of the speech is consistent with the general purpose of the speech, written according to assignment requirements, and clearly identifies desired audience outcomes.
Exemplary – All five components for an effective introduction (getting the audience’s attention, relating topic to audience, establishing speaker credibility, revealing central idea/thesis statement, and previewing main points) are used to motivate the audience to listen.
Exemplary – The number of main points is appropriate for the assignment, reflecting a clear organizational pattern. The selection and organization of main points highlight the central idea/thesis statement for the speech.
Exemplary – The outline is void of awkward sentences and fragments. Only one sentence punctuated with a period is beside each symbol.
Exemplary – Symbols (e.g., Roman numerals, capital letters, Arabic numerals, and lower-case letters) and indentations are used correctly to distinguish the superior/subordinate relationship between points and division principles are followed. All subpoints are extremely relevant to the superior point above them.
Exemplary – Main points are substantiated with a variety of credible support (e.g., facts, statistics, definitions, examples, analogies, etc.) that is sufficient to accomplish the central idea/thesis statement for the speech. Support is extremely relevant for the audience and highly contributes to message clarity and speaker credibility. (If required by the assignment, audience analysis survey results are inserted into the outline to relate the topic to the audience in a significant way.)
Exemplary – Transitions are inserted into the outline as required by the assignment and are highly effective.
Exemplary – The required number of 3 written oral citations and additional oral citations as required based upon the support is inserted into the speech outline. All necessary information is included in the oral citation to verify accuracy and credibility of the content.
Exemplary – The outline provides exceptional details that allow the speaker to practice delivering the speech fluently and extemporaneously. The body of the outline must include at least either two or three main points (Roman numerals) supported by subpoints (capital letters) and subsubpoints (Arabic numerals and lower-case letters).
Exemplary – All components for an effective conclusion (signaling the end, reference to central idea/thesis statement, clear summary of main points, and memorable clincher) logically flow from the body of the speech to provide psychological closure.
Exemplary – The number of entries on the reference list meets the requirement for the assignment and is formatted correctly according to the current APA guidelines.
