Workshop 1
Woo Hoo! We are doing our first workshop of the semester, which means we are halfway through the workshops since there are only two!
In this workshop, you will be sharing your essay with a partner; you will post your rough draft to the Workshop Essay 1 Discussion Board and find a peer’s essay to review there.
Overview
The workshop should work as a complement to the Discussion Board for this Module. There, you were able to compose and share thesis and topic sentences for your essay 1 topic. Now, you will be paired with someone; you will each read the other’s essay and complete the Peer Review Worksheet for your partner’s essay. Answer all of the questions and feel free to offer any other advice to your peer.
Be honest, but polite and courteous about your peer’s essay. The workshop is a chance to do some revision prior to submitting the essay for a grade next week (Saturday, Feb. 25th). Looking at someone else’s essay and answering these questions will, in all likelihood, help you to revise your essay, too!
Instructions:
To begin this assignment, Workshop 1 address the following requirements:
- Download the Peer Review WorksheetActions.
- Post your rough draft to the Workshop Essay 1 Discussion Board by Thursday, Feb. 16th.
- Read your partner’s essay and fill out the Peer Review Worksheet.
- Offer any other comments you would like your partner to know.
- Send the Peer Review Worksheet back to your partner by Saturday, Feb. 18th.
- Once you receive your Peer Review from your partner, upload it and your draft to Workshop 1 by Saturday, Feb. 18th.
Essay 1 Review
Essay 1 Review
Okay, so the math solving little Kim seems out of place on this Page, but I am going to argue that our first Essay is the one that would be the most similar to solving a math problem.You were given a template (outline, if you prefer) that was practically a mathematical formula. It was like a geometry problem; all you had to do was plug in the variables. Yes, that is an overly simplified analogy, but it does apply.In Essay 1, you will be comparing or contrasting one of three topics: College Value, Student Loan Debt, OR Student Athlete Compensation.Your goal is to determine that one author is preferred over the other. This author preference will be derived from comparing or contrasting their points.In order to enhance your success, I am going to highlight a few reminders:
- your thesis must mention both authors, state a preference for one, and give your stance;
- you must use the same points to develop your body paragraphs;
- you must choose subject or point organization;
- you must parenthetically and bibliographically cite both essays.
In Module 4, we covered the following Pages which you will want to review prior to submitting the essay:”Comparison/Contrast (Synthesis),” “Comparison/Contrast Outline Samples,” and “C/C Templates Filled.” You should also revisit the Discussion Board to read my comments to you.Finally, if you have not already done so, be sure to fill out the Peer Review Worksheet for your partner, upload your rough draft and completed Peer Review Worksheet to Canvas by Saturday, February 18th, and submit your final draft of Essay 1 to me by Saturday, the 25th.Let’s head to the next couple of Pages to see the Workshop and the Essay Prompts!
