Due to the advances of the industrial revolution, would slavery have been replaced through mechanization and industrial manufacturing? It is a popular historical theory that if slavery had not been ended through the 13th Amendment that it would have eventually been replaced as an agricultural production system with the mechanized agricultural machines of the late nineteenth century. Given what we know about the culture of the South before and after the Civil War, would the industrial revolution have replaced the need to rely on slavery for economic production? Would the South have been willing to remove slavery from its way of life or was slavery more culturally important? How did the mentality towards slaves differ from that of the low-wage workers brought in during the industrial revolution (aside from wages)? Could slavery have continued within the industrialized world? These guiding questions will help you to formulate your arguments within the essay.
