One of the most human things to do is migrate. (Afterall our original human ancestors are African).
Migration is often due to economic issues. Every American family has a migration story (though
for Native Americans it is 10,000+ years ago) and most people in other countries have migration
stories. The purpose of this assignment is to investigate (if possible) your families migration story.
Where did they come from? What occupations did they have before they migrated? What was
the economy like? What prompted them to migrate? Where did they go? What jobs did they take
when they first came here? If they are here for a few generations, give an example of some of the
jobs people had for each generation. (Example: my ancestor Timothy Clark was the son of a
farmer in Ireland, came to USA during the famine and worked in the marble quarries in Vermont.
His sons ran a marble headstone company (or became priests). My grandfather was a musician
and ran a book store and my father was a librarian).
This is a great time for you to talk to your grandparents and elderly relatives. If you cannot do this
for your family, you can use a friend’s migration story. Write a 5-7 page, double spaced, 12 point
font, paper summarizing the economics behind the migration story.
IMPORTANT:
Right now I am a 21 year old college student attending a school in NY and would like the essay to reflect on one of my “friends” who traveled “internationally” to the US as a teenager to my middle school in California.
The “friend” and family lineage can be fictional but the essay has to seem like I did research on a real person lol.
