A critical introduction is an essay that explains a topic to someone who hasn’t heard about it before It needs to explain the most important ideas and approaches. It needs to reference the key texts
Where one approach is similar to another, it should spell out the similarities
Where there is disagreement, it need to explain that too:
Who is disagreeing with whom?
What are they disagreeing about?
Being critical means that you’re not just repeating/summarising what scholars have written
Instead, you’re explaining how it’s different from what other scholars have written
-And explaining why it is reasonable, convincing, etc (or not)
Where two sources disagree, you can pick a side and argue that one of them is right and one is wrong
Or you can simply explain what they disagree about and why
