Philosophy Fallacy Paper
Write a Fallacy Paper using the 3 given sources bolded “First, Second, and Third Argument” and 5 bullet points labeled “Instructions for each Argument” for each source. Label the paper “First Argument”, “Second Argument”, and “Third Argument.”
You must label your papers with the headings:
“First Argument” “Second Argument” and “Third Argument.”
The first argument must analyze a short (3-minute or less) video clip of a presidential or vice-presidential election (general or primary) campaign debate found online. The video is below:
-
Watch this video of the Biden V Trump debate, but only really pay attention to the short span of 26 minutes 19 seconds through 29 minutes 19 seconds.
-
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2tScqtqznk&t=2s (26:19-29:19)
The second argument must analyze a short (3-minute or less) video clip of any type of argument (e.g. a commercial, interview, debate, etc…)
-
Watch the beginning three minutes to the video, “The moment Jordan Peterson asked a hard question about Trump to Bill Maher”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDXCp992YS4 (20 Seconds – 3:20)
The third argument must analyze a short “letter to the editor” which occurred during the semester from any of the following (or similar) sources:
-
Jim Gray: ‘Getting tough’ on fentanyl won’t solve the overdose problem. We must end the drug war.(you will be able to use the site for free viewing 3 times.) https://www.pressenterprise.com/2023/04/23/jim-gray-getting-tough-on-fentanyl-wont-solve-the-overdose-problem-we-must-end-the-drug-war/
Instructions For Each Argument
1. For each of the three arguments, first directly quote the argument you selected followed by the web-address where the argument was obtained. If the fallacy occurs in a longer video, make sure to specify the time spot the fallacy occurs (e.g. 3:30-6:00).
2. Identify the premises of the argument and the conclusion.
3. State clearly what the argument is trying to prove.
4. State what fallacy is committed, and why the fallacy doesn’t prove the conclusion.
5. In your own terms, state how the argument could be reconstructed without the use of the fallacy in order to arrive reasonably to the same conclusion.
(Make sure that you have items 1-5 for each of the three arguments: presidential debate, any video clip, and letter to the editor.)
REMINDER: Use the five steps above as a guide to answer and base the essay prompt off of the 3 sources given above as well.
I will upload the document as a PDF as well.
