Assignment: Write a “Literacy Narrative” describing the process of learning a particular skill that you have learned in the past. This is not a “how to” essay. This is a narrative of your experience learning a skill. Skills can include languages, arts, technical skills, and many more. The final version of the essay must be 1000-1500 words, presented in MLA Format.
Task: You are not required to use outside research for this essay assignment. You will be writing from personal experience and cultivating your skills of observation, description, and analysis. Therefore, even though you will be working towards writing an academic essay, this will be a first-person narrative.See your textbook for ideas about focus and organization.
Ask yourself questions to help you imagine new options or directions:
• Backstory: what was your motivation for learning this skill?
• How did you get instruction, feedback, or encouragement?
• How did you experiment till you found strategies that worked for you?
• What were the obstacles, challenges, or failures? What did you learn from them?
• What were the “successes”? What did you learn from them?
• What was your “Discovery of Significance” about how you learn new skills? Can you apply these insights to improve your future experience as a “self-motivated learner”?
