Media Analysis Paper: Students will write a 4 page essay describing an ethical dilemma for a person working in their desired profession, depicted through at least two forms of media.
Media Examples:
A student might select a movie and a TV show to discuss ethical dilemmas of a psychologist.
A newspaper article and a podcast might be used to discuss ethical dilemmas faced by a counselor.
Or, a TV show and a book might depict the ethical dilemmas of a lawyer.
Writing the Paper:
Introduction: Introduce the 2 forms of media that will be analyzed throughout the paper. Be sure to properly cite your chosen form of media (For example, if you have chosen a film, you must cite this film in the opening paragraph and throughout your summary. Page 1-2: Explain what went wrong. Summarize the ethical dilemma in which the real, or fictitious, professional(s) is/are involved. You can choose two forms of media that portray equally unethical situations. Or you can choose an example of an unethical situation and an ethical situation portrayed through media (In essence, through one form of media, summarize how the situation was handled wrong and through your second form of media, summarize a positive example of how the same/or similar situation might be handled).
Page 2-4: In week 4, you were asked to find a code of ethics related to your desired/or chosen profession. In the final portion of the paper, you are asked to analyze the two forms of media that you have chosen through the lens of the five questions presented below. The code of ethics of your desired/or chosen profession should be cited throughout this section:
In your 2 forms of media, what actions did the person take that might be considered unethical?
In either form of media, were the actions taken aligned with that profession’s code of ethics? (Your code of ethics must be cited)
If not, what actions could the person have taken to remain within the profession’s code of ethics? (Your code of ethics must be cited)
How can and does your desired/or chosen profession respond to ethical misconduct among its membership? (Your code of ethics must be cited)
Using at least two theories presented in the textbook (For example: consequentialism, relativism, determinism), explain how each theory might influence the ethical situations and the actions taken by the real, or fictitious, professional(s) presented through your chosen forms of media.
Conclusion: Restate what was discussed throughout the paper and provide a final takeaway for your reader.
This essay should be 4 pages, double-spaced, have one-inch margins, and follow APA style formatting requirements (A title page, in-text citations, and a reference page should be included).
