Discussion Questions
Equations can be used to model everyday problems. Here’s one example:
You and your friend have agreed to grab lunch together. You each order a $10 meal, but your friend still feels hungry, so they also order a $6 dessert. The total including tax is $28.60, and you add a 20% tip on top of that amount. However, your friend has forgotten their credit card and promises to pay their share of the total, including the tax and tip, later. How much does your friend owe you?
Word problems help you practice translating a real-world situation into an equation that models it.
In the example above, the amount your friend owes might be modeled as:
x / (10 + 6) = (28.60 * 1.20) / (10 + 10 + 6)
There can be more than one way to model a word problem as an equation, but you should always end up with the same final answer no matter how you model it.
In your initial post, answer the following:
- Write a word problem that can be solved using an equation. Do not include the equation in your post.
