This topic hardly needs an introduction. We hear about changes in our weather every other day, it seems. We just experienced the hottest day recorded on Earth July 4, 2023. The polar ice cap is melting; there are more and more severe hurricanes each year; winters are more severe in parts of the country; wildfires rage out of control in record numbers; floods destroy houses and leave people stranded, and on and on. Even the insect world is affected by changing their migration habits and by becoming extinct. Other wildlife is endangered by the drastic changes in our planet’s climate. And yet, there has been almost nothing done on the scale that needs to be done to save our earth. In fact, there are segments of our society who claim that climate change is a hoax, not truly an emergency, and that the science foretelling of catastrophe is “fake science.”
In this assignment you will be investigating the science of climate change to determine whether scientists are exaggerating the urgency of wide-scale solutions and what changes should be made to correct the direction our planet is headed.
TOPICS for Project #3: Climate Change/Global Warming
1.Write an argument supporting what you believe to be the most effective means of fighting and reversing climate change’s negative effects?
2.Write an argument in which you take a clear position on whether or not the science surrounding climate change is a hoax.
3.What do you think are the leading causes of global climate change?
4. Where do you see the most catastrophic effects of climate change: on human life? On the oceans? On animal life?
5. The *REDD partnership between Norway and Indonesia is an outcome of the pressing need to reduce carbon emissions resulting from deforestation. Research this partnership and then write an argument on whether or not protecting our forests should be a priority in the fight against climate change.
*REDD+ stands for countries’ efforts to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, and foster conservation, sustainable management of forests, and enhancement of forest carbon stocks.
6. Would a Progressive Carbon Tax (on all carbon emissions, including cars, trucks, etc.) effectively prevent climate change. NOTE::You will need to research what the Progressive Carbon Tax is all about.
