Your paper will do the following, in the following order:
1. Give your understanding of the author’s overall argument
2. Discuss the evidence they use to make this argument
3. Present 3 of the author’s key points in the reading. Ground each point in a specific paragraph that you find quite important to the author’s overall argument. Explain why you think each point is important to the overall argument.
4. Share your analysis of the argument and the points you have highlighted. You should make at least 2 solid points of your own here. If you are not sure how to analyze a text, here are some analytical questions to consider (you do not have to select these questions to guide your analysis – they are only offered to help clarify what constitutes analytical thinking):
How does the reading help us better understand the way society works?
How does the argument relate to hegemonic or counter-hegemonic ideas about this social issue?
How does this author’s argument contrast or compare with previous writings we’ve read on related topics?
5. Connect to a contemporary issue or debate: include a news article (summarize it for us), Youtube clip or other media story on the reading’s topic, and share your understanding of that media in light of what you have learned from the assigned reading.
you will need to submit a 5 page paper (1200 words) addressing points 1-5 above in more formal written format. You do not need to quote the full passages in point 3, just cite where it is in the text like this (page 24).
