Read, view, and listen to the learning resources for this week.
Caution: You have a PBS Frontline video tied to this week’s assignment. PBS Frontline shares great investigative journalism, but the narrations for their videos can be overly-dramatic. That shouldn’t detract from the educational value of the video; I just want you to be aware going into it.
Then, write a 2-3 page response to the following prompt:
The Zero Tolerance video provides insights into how federal policy towards immigration unfolded during Donald Trump’s campaign and his early years in office. In doing so, it identifies several factors in the policymaking environment that affected policy development.
Using insights from that video, as well as those from the assigned learning resources, identify the environmental factors that emerged as important and explain how they came to bear on the policy, focusing on factors that enabled or hampered policy change.
Be sure to consider the full range of factors described in the enviornmental model instructor video and those explained in more detail in the assigned readings (especially from this week, but you can also incorporate insights from prior weeks’ learning resources). Some factors are addressed explicitly in the Zero Tolerance video; others are implicit. You might also consider whether or not the factors of influence and how they affected immigration policy played out as we would expect them to in a typical policy situation. In other words, did the policies develop in the way we would expect them to in our representative system of government? Is this a good model for developing federal policy?
Note: While the Frontline video identifies specific individuals or organizations, please be sure to remember to link your insights to broader categories of environmental factors that those individuals/organizations fall within. In other words, it is great to identify specific individuals/organizations and tie them to the broader factor in the environmental framework.
Remember to ensure that the entire response is written as a coherent, flowing essay.
Be sure to incorporate the readings and/or videos from this week (and prior weeks, if appropriate) as relevant to demonstrate your application of them, and be sure to use proper APA citation to identify where you have incorporated those readings or any other resources. Do not incorporate resources that have not been assigned in the course.
