Explore what Neil Gaiman is conveying about any of the themes listed below, related to coming of age,
in his novel The Ocean at the End of the Lane. This will result in a “theme-based” thesis statement and
literary analysis, just as you did for your first essay.
Possible* Themes:
Coming of Age, Memory, Fantasy vs. Reality, Wisdom vs. Knowledge, Adults vs. Children,
Deception/Trust, Death, Time, Trauma, Wisdom vs. Experience, Rebirth, Pain, Imagination,
Powerlessness, Freedom, Food & Comfort, Material vs. Spiritual, Power, Self-Identity, etc..
*and if you think of another theme, great!
Objectives of the Final Essay:
1. Analyze a work of literature.
2. Create a thesis that conveys a strong, interesting argument about the literary work, and then
prove your thesis using evidence from the text.
3. Use literary techniques (setting, tone, imagery, etc) to help prove your thesis.
4. Be sure to use specific quotes and examples from the piece to prove your point, and make sure
you cite them! (page number).
F.A.Q
1. How many literary devices should I explore in my essay?
Between one and three. The most important thing is that you have a strong, complex idea at the heart
of your thesis. Whatever literary elements you see contributing to how the author conveys this idea are
best discovered after you’ve crafted your main thesis argument.
2. How many proofs (quotes) do I need per paragraph?
Please use two (2) – three (3) proofs per paragraph (or more if you wish). Most of the proofs should be
direct quotes from the novel, while paraphrasing the text is also acceptable, as well as the occasional
bit of summary.
3. The title of a novel is either italicized or underlined: The Ocean at the End of the Lane or The Ocean at
the End of the Lane
4. Remember to analyze the quotes you provide. Don’t just observe that they are examples of a
particular literary element, but rather analyze how the quote contributes to the meaning/message you
believe is conveyed by the novel. https://yes-pdf.com/book/4524/read (THIS IS THE LINK TO THE PDF, BE VERY ATTENTIVE TO THE INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN)
